One-Way vs Two-Way Remote Starters
One-way or two-way? The practical difference
When you are choosing a remote starter, the specification sheets talk about range. That matters, but it is the second question. The first is whether you want the remote to tell you the vehicle actually started.
One-way: you press, it starts
A one-way remote sends a command in one direction. Press the button and the vehicle starts — but the remote has no way of telling you it worked. If the vehicle is parked outside your window, that is usually fine. You can see the exhaust.
Viper lists its 4105 one-way system at up to a quarter-mile range.
Two-way: the vehicle answers back
A two-way remote receives a signal in return. The remote confirms the engine is running, so you are not walking out to a cold vehicle wondering whether the command reached it.
Range is usually much greater as well. Viper lists its 5906 Responder HD at a one-mile range — roughly four times the 4105.
Which one suits you
The honest test is where you park.
- A one-way system is usually enough if you start the vehicle from home, from a driveway, or anywhere you can see it.
- A two-way system earns its cost if you start the vehicle from inside a workplace, a shopping centre, an apartment building, or anywhere the vehicle is out of sight and some distance away.
Published range figures are measured in open conditions. Buildings, parked vehicles and terrain all reduce them, so treat the numbers as a comparison between systems rather than a promise.
